Course Description
On April 23, 2013, Governor Rick Scott signed the Florida Optometry Oral Drug Bill into law (Chapter 2013-26, Laws of Florida). This statutory language provides every “certified optometrist” with the opportunity to obtain the authority to administer and prescribe oral ocular pharmaceutical agents in addition to topical ocular pharmaceutical agents (which was previously allowed by statute). The law specifies that certified optometrist must complete a 20-hour Florida Optometry Board-approved course and examination on general and ocular pharmaceutical agents before being authorized to administer or prescribe oral agents. The intent of this course is to overview the Florida Optometry Oral Drug Bill and provide the necessary regulatory and clinical information that certified optometrists need to qualify to prescribe the oral medications listed on the Oral Ocular Pharmaceutical Agents Formulary. The required post-examination for this activity is solely based on the content provided within the structure of the course. This examination is intended to ensure that a certified optometrist in Florida has the requisite knowledge and competence to prescribe oral ocular pharmaceutical agents for ocular conditions safely and effectively.

Dr. Lenchus was an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine when involved in the development of this course.  He had no relevant financial relationships with ineligible companies at that time. He is currently employed by Broward Health as Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President for Broward Health. He is the current President of the Florida Medical Association and is a Past President of the Florida Osteopathic Medical Association.
