On December 29, 2022, the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 enacted a new one-time, eight-hour federal training requirement for all Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA)-registered practitioners on the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders. All DEA-registered practitioners, with the exception of those that are solely veterinarians, are responsible for satisfying this new federal training requirement. Beginning on June 27, 2023, practitioners who are completing their initial registration application or renewing their current registration will be required to check a box on their online DEA registration form affirming that they have completed the new training requirement. The deadline for satisfying this new training requirement is the date of a practitioner’s next scheduled DEA registration submission regardless of whether it is an initial registration or a renewal registration on or after June 27, 2023. This is a one-time federal training requirement.
This course fulfills the new federal training requirement for all DEA-authorized prescribers. The FMA is authorized to report course completion to CE Broker for relicensure purposes for the following professions: Allopathic and Osteopathic Physicians, Physician Assistants/Physician Associate, APRNs, and Podiatrists.After completing this activity, participants should be better able to:
- Apply foundational practice elements for controlled substance prescribing for approved indications
- Interpret screening and assessment tools for identifying patients at risk for substance use disorders
- Identify tools and resources to foster optimization of practice impact, including weighing risks and benefits of controlled substance prescribing
- Incorporate strategies to successfully initiate and monitor controlled substances
- Construct evidence-based, individualized treatment plans to provide effective care for persons with substance use disorders
To complete this 8-hour course, learners must complete the pre-test, review each of the following recorded modules, pass the accompanying post-test for each module, and complete one final evaluation form:
- Module 1: General Principles of Controlled Substance Prescribing - 30 minutes
- Module 2: Universal Risk Mitigation Strategies for Controlled Substances - 30 minutes
- Module 3: Basics of Pain Management - 60 minutes
- Module 4: Managing Opioid Therapy - 60 minutes
- Module 5: Introduction to Substance Use Disorders - 60 minutes
- Module 6: Opioid Use Disorder - 60 minutes
- Module 7: Alcohol Use Disorder - 60 minutes
- Module 8: Tobacco and Cannabis Use Disorders - 60 minutes
- Module 9: Stimulant and Sedative Use Disorders - 60 minutes

Participants will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM MOC credit.
ABP MOC Recognition Statement Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn up to 8 MOC points in the American Board of Pediatrics’ (ABP) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program. It is the CME activity provider’s responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABP MOC credit.
ABS MOC Recognition Statement Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn credit toward the CME and Self-Assessment requirements of the American Board of Surgery’s Continuous Certification program. It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit learner completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABS credit.
ABOHNS MOC Recognition Statement Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn their required annual part II self-assessment credit in the American Board of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery’s Continuing Certification program (formerly known as MOC). It is the CME activity provider's responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of recognizing participation.
ABPath MOC Recognition Statement Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the learner to earn up to 8 Lifelong Learning point in the American Board of Pathology's Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. Learners will earn MOC points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
