This comprehensive course addresses the mandatory content for Physician Assistants and APRNs in Florida registered to prescribe Schedule II, III and/or IV controlled substances as allowed by Florida law, effective January 1, 2017. Course content highlights evidence-based approaches to pain management for patients, particularly those with substance use disorders, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive, multidisciplinary strategy that prioritizes non-opioid pain treatments, thoughtful opioid prescribing when necessary, and active engagement with patients and their support systems. Panelists cover key assessment techniques, treatment modalities like medication-assisted treatment and non-pharmacological options, strategies for managing complex situations involving co-occurring pain and substance use disorders, and key reminders about Florida’s prescription drug monitoring program, E-FORCSE®. Upon completing this course and reviewing the resources, participants should be able to:
Appreciate the impact of pain on health outcomes
Differentiate between current and previous standards for prescribing controlled substances.
Recognize available treatment options in the field of pain management.
Discuss effective methods to initiate, continue, and discontinue treatment for pain.
Implement recommended strategies and tools to support and improve their prescribing practices
Access/utilize current practice guidelines for substance use disorder (SUD), opioid use disorder (OUD) and stimulant use disorder (StUD)
Execute evidence-based screening and diagnostic tools to improve the continuum of care for SUD and OUD.
Implement effective interventions in SUD and OUD
Evaluate various patient scenarios and determine whether to initiate stimulants for stimulant use disorder/Behavioral health disorders or opioids for pain management
Employ methods to reduce stigma toward those seeking services and treatment for SUD
