Course Description and Target Audience
In July 2015, Florida House Bill 279 expanded authority of pharmacists to allow for the administration of immunizations and vaccines listed in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Adult Immunization Schedule. To become certified, pharmacists must successfully complete an immunization administration certification program of no fewer than 20 hours, approved by the Florida Board of Pharmacy. In addition, during each subsequent licensure renewal term, the certified pharmacist must complete a 3-hour course on the safe and effective administration of vaccines, including the use of epinephrine for allergic reactions. Florida Medical Association, Florida Retail Federation and Florida Pharmacy Association collaborated to offer this three-hour online course to fulfill this particular continuing education requirement. This content addresses the safe and effective administration of vaccines with a specific emphasis on all vaccines listed in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices Adult Immunization Schedule. The course also addresses the safe and effective administration of epinephrine by pharmacists when medically necessary.
 
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this application-based course, learners should be able to:
 

• Recognize the role that pharmacists can play in the administration of vaccine preventable diseases listed under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and vaccines authorized for emergency use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) within the context of current Florida rules and regulations
• Identify the effectiveness of immunizations to prevent various diseases
• Identify specific barriers and misconceptions that can lead to under-utilization of vaccinations
• Demonstrate effective communication strategies to overcome and dispel these barriers and misconceptions
• Recognize side effects associated with vaccines
• Describe the available vaccines used to prevent the spread of disease
• Differentiate between live attenuated vaccines and inactivated vaccines
• Provide an overview of the vaccine preventable diseases listed under the CDC
• Recognize patients who are eligible for vaccines listed under the CDC, including those authorized for emergency use by the US Food and Drug Administration
• Educate patients about potential adverse reactions after receiving a vaccine and how to manage them
• Demonstrate the appropriate use of vaccinations safely and effectively
• Use proper techniques for administration of vaccines by the intramuscular and subcutaneous routes
• Explain the recommended methods to ensure proper storage and handling of approved vaccines
• Use epinephrine for an allergic reaction and administer appropriately
• Identify signs and symptoms of adverse events and the emergency procedures immunizing pharmacists should be prepared to implement to manage and report adverse events
• Report immunizations, errors, and adverse events in national databases and registries
• Given a patient case, select appropriate vaccines using an immunization schedule from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, and identify appropriate timing, doses, and routes of administration.
• Evaluate patient histories and make patient-specific recommendations based on the appropriate immunization schedule
